The nationalisation of the iron and steel industry in 1949 was a highly exceptional measure. It was pushed through Parliament with great vigour and determination. The fact that the Labour Government was so persistent with a measure which can fairly be described as in no way popular is important as it sheds light on the policy of nationalisation. For the following reasons this measure stood in a class by itself.
