The nationalised industries, other than steel, have been operating for twenty-five years or more. This book is an attempt, within defined limits, to write their history. It is easy to be prolix on the subject — the supply of material has become vast. So some selection and compression have been necessary. The boundaries between State-owned and other industries are becoming blurred; so some treatment has been given to the subject of the mixed economy, which in the course of the seventies will become more mixed than ever.
