Nationalisation springs from the urge to improve the lot of the workers in the industry taken over. Public ownership should provide a cosy protection from the woes of unregulated capitalism. When Sidney Webb was planning the takeover of certain industries he was pressed by Arthur Henderson to produce a programme for nationalising all industries, so that the whole working class could be uplifted. Why confine the undoubted benefits of nationalisation to miners and railwaymen?
