Abstract

There are approximately 500 paint manufacturers in the U.K., the annual total turnover being in the region of £160 million; the growth rate is 3 per cent. 50 per cent of the turnover is generated by six firms. There has, in the last decade, been a movement towards larger groups through mergers and take-overs. Exports of paint amount to approximately £16 million, but this has decreased considerably in the past few years, as large firms have tended to open or acquire factories overseas, mainly because of the prohibitive costs of shipping and insurance.
