Abstract
Except in those few cases where a level bed of rock is sufficient foundation, concrete is the principal material used for foundations, with some steel for reinforcing in all but the simplest jobs. As the stability of a building depends largely on its foundations, it is important to ensure that these materials are of satisfactory quality for the job they have to do.
