Cromwell’s Genius

  • H. W. Koch
Part of the World Profiles book series (WOPR)

CROMWELL’S ROLE as a politician was resoundingly negative, yet his role as an outstanding military leader seems beyond dispute. In the final analysis he was the most successful military commander on either side during the Civil War. Indeed, his military ability may well explain his failure as a politician, since it is very rare for a man to combine brilliance in the profession of arms with the ability, the feeling, and the knowledge of how to manipulate politics in such a way as to obtain harmony and permanent results.
