An Enlightened Despot?
IN 1840, the centennial of Frederick’s ascension to the throne, the Young Hegelian, Friedrich Köppen, published a pamphlet, dedicated to his friend Karl Marx, in celebration of the event. “According to a popular tradition,” he wrote, “after a hundred years man is reborn. The time has come! May Frederick’s resurrected spirit descend on us, and with flaming sword destroy all enemies that are blocking our entry into the Promised Land! Let us swear to live and die in his spirit!”
