THE TRADITIONAL HISTORY OF MARTIN LUTHER had one great merit—its simplicity. It was not encumbered with subtleties. Luther had become hardened to abuse. Isolated at the Wartburg, he had lost the direction of the movement. Fanatics had thrown all into confusion, so much so that, in order to keep his vessel afloat, Luther had been forced to steer a somewhat irregular course.
