The Daily Life of the Great King

Part of the World Profiles book series

WHAT WAS THE NATURE of an ordinary day in the life of Louis XIV? Saint-Simon furnishes us with a very detailed picture starting from 1694, the year in which he came to court as a young man of nineteen and began his almost uninterrupted residence there. “One needed merely to know the day and the hour to know exactly what the king was doing…. It is difficult to appreciate the extent to which this regularity benefited his service, the brilliance of his court, the ease of paying him court and speaking with him. If each might speak but little with him, each would have his turn and there would be opportunity for intercourse with others, harmony in his household and efficiency and dispatch in his business.”
