WE HAVE ARRIVED at certain conclusions about this long reign after each of the principal chapters of its history. Our over-all conclusion must be based on the fact that the monarchy survived the king for only seventy-four years, a period of approximately the same length as his reign. Louis XIV had exhausted the French monarchy.
