Hardy’s first novel, The Poor Man and the Lady, by the Poor Man, was never published. He tells us that:

The story was… a sweeping dramatic satire of the squirearchy and nobility, London society, the vulgarity of the middle class, modem Christianity… the tendency of the writing being socialistic, not to say revolutionary.1
