On 14 November 1872, a long letter appeared in The Times about the condition of the labourers in Wiltshire. The subject was a topical one, for the Agricultural Labourers’ Union had been founded only nine months earlier and labourers all over the south-west were going on strike for more pay. The letter, which was signed Richard Jefferies, was obviously written by a partisan of the farmers, but the author was not a farmer himself. He was a young and impoverished journalist whose work had only been printed in local papers so far.
