All businesses are concerned with the problem of obtaining information quickly. In some cases the time scale is instantaneous; for example, the catalyst plant of an oil refinery. In other cases immediacy, while not essential, is nevertheless desirable; for example, a credit customer of a departmental store will be prepared to wait, say, five minutes for the information regarding her account, but not for an hour.
