Abstract

Born 21 Aug 1765, 3rd son of George III and Queen Charlotte; entered Navy as midshipman upon Prince George in 1779; thereafter pursued a naval career and held various commands; retired from active service as rear-admiral, 1791; created D of Clarence, 1789, and provided with parliamentary annuity of £12,000, raised to £18,000 on marriage in 1818; 1791–1811 lived with Mrs Dorothy Jordan (1762–1816) by whom he had ten children of family name Fitzclarence; promoted Admiral of the Fleet, 1811; married 18 Jul 1818 Adelaide of Saxe-Coburg-Meiningen; Lord High Admiral, 1827–8; succeeded to throne 26 Jun 1830; crowned 8 Sep 1831; died 20 Jun 1837; no legitimate heirs.
