Abstract

In 1957, Rall, Sutherland, and Berthet, [1] reporting the effects of epinephrine and glucagon on phosphorylase activation in liver homogenates, stated that:

‘... the response of the homogenates to the hormones occurred in two stages. In the first stage, a particulate fraction of homogenates produced a heat-stable factor in the presence of hormones; in the second stage, this factor stimulated the formation of liver phosphorylase in supernatant fractions of homogenates in which the hormones themselves were inactive.’
