Dietary Aflatoxin Loads and the Incidence of Human Hepatocellular Carcinoma in Thailand

  • Chapter
Symposium on Mycotoxins in Human Health

Abstract

In mid-1967, a research project was initiated to investigate the possible role mycotoxins may play in the aetiology of human liver disease in southeast Asia. This present report is concerned with the results of 3 years of study in Thailand. Thailand was chosen as the principal country of the study because climate and agricultural practices favour mycotoxin contamination of foods and foodstuffs and because several reports indicated that certain areas of south-east Asia, Thailand in particular, suffer from apparent high incidences of liver disease, especially hepatocellular carcinoma.1–4
