The Great Lock-out 1896–1898

When the Federation was formed in 1896, every circumstance was leading towards the clash of forces which both sides felt to be inevitable and which erupted in the great lock-out only fifteen months later. In this brief interval the Federation twice threatened a national lock-out and the ASE held back only because they were looking for more favourable ground on which to fight.
