Abstract
IN HIS SCHOLARLY CAPACITY a historian should not deliver eulogies; nor should he perpetuate or embellish legends. When reviewing an extraordinary life like Churchill’s, he has an obligation to examine this life critically in the context of its time. Historians hold that just as the greatness of a leader cannot be properly appreciated without a close look at the era on which he left his mark, so the forces agitating any given era cannot be understood without a careful evaluation of the great men who bent these forces to their will. In brief, great men and their times illuminate each other.
