The word “statistics ”is used in three distinct senses:
  1. (1)

may mean a collection of numerical data. In this sense the term is commonly used in everyday life.

  2. (2)

may refer primarily to methods of elucidation of quantitative data (the data being generally affected by a multiplicity of causes). This is the sense in which the term is used in the title of this and similar books.

  3. (3)

may be the plural of a statistic. The meaning of this term is fully explained later in connection with sampling theory. Broadly, in this sense statistics are characteristic measures of samples.
