Chairman’s Opening Remarks

  • P. F. Strawson

Miss Ishiguro raises or alludes to a number of issues in her paper, and Professor van Peursen raises or alludes to a great many more. I could not hope to review them all adequately in these opening remarks, even if I were competent to do so. So instead, since Professor van Peursen seems to be in general sympathy with Miss Ishiguro’s central line of argument, I shall confine myself to some comments on that central line of argument. I am in sympathy with it myself, so my function will be expository rather than critical. If I am guilty of misrepresentation or misinterpretation, I hope Miss Ishiguro will correct me.
