Abstract
It is paradoxical that Alf Ross should be well known, both as a penetrating critic of the notion of ‘Practical Reasoning’, and as one who has made outstanding contributions to the study of the logic of imperatives. I therefore thought it fitting to write for this volume in his honour a discussion of one central question concerning that logic — a question, recent treatments of which have, inevitably, drawn on his seminal earlier work on the subject.
