Abstract
A d.c. rail derived from a mains supply via a transformer, rectifier and smoothing components only, is likely to have a total variation of at least ± 15% when mains changes, regulation and ageing effects are taken into account. Although it is difficult to imagine a case where it would be impossible to design a circuit that would not continue to function with supply variations of this order, it is fairly easy to demonstrate that circuit performance could be unacceptably changed.
