Abstract

In designing a mechanical friction clutch use is made of the basic characteristic of friction, which is the tangential or lateral force resisting the sliding motion of one body over another, and is proportional to the total pressure perpendicular to the sliding surfaces. The study of friction in itself is complex but simple laws relating to friction are true over a limited range of sliding velocities and pressures used between the corresponding members.
