Abstract

The word ‘transfer’ infers movement from one place to another, which is what occurs in the transfer moulding process along with a change of state taking place during the cycle of operation. The transfer of powder to a complete moulding is achieved by placing powder, or a pellet of powder, into a hot chamber and then applying pressure by a close fitting punch entering the chamber, the pressure being applied by an hydraulic system. The material is plasticised in the chamber and forced through the orifice, thus increasing the temperature of the powder. The plasticised material then flows freely and quickly, ensuring that it fills the mould impressions.
