Abstract

Important changes in metal forming processes took place in the 18th and 19th centuries when mechanised operations started to be adopted. At that point it was probably found that existing materials were not suitable for the newer techniques, and not good enough for the wide range of new applications and from this situation the modern steels and non-ferrous alloys evolved. In many cases the acceptance of a new metal or alloy led to the development of improved fabricating methods in order that the desirable properties could be used effectively.
