Abstract
Specifications for electronic components have become more complex and varied in the post-war years. Much of this has been due to the increasing number of applications in which the components are now used: from kitchen equipment to communication satellites. Each new application has called for either modification to existing specifications or more often the drafting of new ones. Individuals and organisations all considered that their own approach to specification writing was correct and that the ‘faults’ in other specifications could not be tolerated, a philosophy which was rapidly leading to a chaotic situation.
