Abstract

The properties of a casting are primarily dependent on the raw materials used and any treatment the alloy undergoes at the melting stage can have considerable effects on these properties. Designers of castings should consult with an appropriate foundry during the design stage, as the foundry may be able to offer advice resulting in casting reliability, economics in machining and selection of the metal from which the casting should be produced. Selection from the wide range of ferrous and non ferrous metals must depend upon the final characteristics required in the casting.
