By late summer of 1918 the war had turned decisively against the armies of the Central Powers. The failure of Ludendorff’s spring offensive caused Germany to abandon hope of victory and to concentrate on avoiding surrender, but the fate of the Quadruple Alliance was sealed in September when the Allies resumed the offensive in the Balkans and in a few days provoked the collapse of Bulgaria.
