Abstract
Estuaries have been shown to be regions in which many factors interact. Disturbance of any of them can affect others. One of the first aims of any study must be to build up a picture of the behaviour of the estuary and all its component parts. There are many ways of doing this and some of the major ones form the subject of the next four chapters.
