Wave Propagation in Rectangular Waveguides
We saw in Chapter 8 how the extension of plane waves could be restricted in one direction by placing two parallel conducting planes at right angles to the electric field. It was also shown that the plane waves obtained in this way still had an infinite energy content. In this section on wave-guides, we shall see how the wave can be further confined by placing two more conducting planes at right angles to the first pair, thus giving a closed rectangular pipe. The wave is now confined within the pipe, and will propagate in its direction.
