Abstract

The Japanese have always been an intensely patriotic people. The desire to gain the respect of the world and to be recognized as an important power was partly responsible for the disaster of 1945. Since World War II Japan has had no expansionist ambitions and Japanese pride has centred on the economic miracle of the 1950s and 1960s.
