Abstract

China is the most populous and one of the most ancient civilizations in the world. The manners, customs and attitudes of the Chinese have always appeared to be curious to Western people, but in the modern world the most amazing feature is the pace at which China has become a world power. To understand this transformation and to be aware of the likely role of China in international affairs, it is necessary to consider the most important features of the Chinese civilization—its geographical setting, people, languages, religions and history.
