Abstract
Packaging has been used since man wanted to keep, store or move goods such as water, wine, meat or agricultural products. In early times the packing materials used were those that were close to hand (e.g. shells, hollowed out pieces of wood, rush baskets, leather pouches). Later when people learned how to make earthenware jars and glass bottles the goods could be kept longer and a certain amount of trade with neighbouring tribes or peoples became feasible.
