The discussion of molecular dynamical calculations and neutron inelastic scattering for liquid metal rubidium at the end of the previous chapter suggests that, for such systems with relatively soft cores and long-range forces, an approach using essentially independent density fluctuations may be useful for some purposes. We immediately confirm that, if we note that the ratio of the specific heats γ for simple metals at their melting points is ∼1.2 or 1.3, whereas for a hard-sphere like system such as argon γ ∼2.2 at the triple point.
