Abstract

When a bending moment is applied to a beam, Figure 12.1, the fibres on one face of the beam are extended while those on the opposite face are compressed. Tensile and compressive stresses are thereby induced in the beam which produce a moment, called the moment of resistance which is equal and opposite to the applied bending moment.
