Abstract

For most contemporary philosophers of religion, the question which serves as the title of this opening chapter is one of the most intelligible that can be asked. The answer given to the question is all-important. For the most part, I shall not question this assumption in this chapter. On the contrary, I shall accept it and observe where it takes us. I do not think that it takes us finally to anywhere of very great interest, although much that is of interest and importance must be mentioned en route.
