A knowledge of the characteristics and location of the major soil groups in Eastern Nigeria is important to a fuller understanding of the present and former patterns of agricultural land use and rural settlement within the region; such a knowledge may also aid in evaluating the prospects for improvements in farming and alleviation of the problems of over-population through resettlement and other development schemes.
