Part of the History in Depth book series (HD)

Abstract

Ghiberti completed the second (his first) pair of doors only in 1424. Another pair were almost immediately commissioned, the most celebrated of the three, which Vasari described as ‘the finest masterpiece in the world whether among the ancients or the moderns’, adding the famous remark attributed to Michelangelo, that they would grace the entrance of Paradise. Ghiberti himself in his ‘Commentaries’ described them as ‘the most remarkable work I have done’.
