Paintings for Religious Houses

This contract is for the work known as the ‘St Agostino Altarpiece’, which was subsequently broken up and its parts dispersed. The contract reveals some details of the solemnity of a commission granted by a religious house, and an interesting proposal for part payment in land. The further instructions, carrying the patronal supervision even further, do not survive, presumably because they were not attested by the notary. The work took not eight, but fifteen years.
