Abstract

On. of the most moving incidents in the Divine Comed. is the meeting of Virgil and Sordello in the sixth canto of the Purgatori. Dante escribes how the troubadour, still proud and disdainful in death, stands alone on the eastern side of the Holy Mount. At Virgil’s approach the soul stiffens like a crouching lion, and refuses to answer the poet’s questions, but, instead, asks him whence he came and who he was. Virgil begins to answer with the word: ‘ Mantua⋯ ’. At this, the shade, with sudden joy, leaps to him and they embrace. ‘ That gentle spirit was thus swift, at the mere mention of his city, to greet there his fellow citizen.’
