Abstract
The reduction of the Flemish principality, the acquisition of Champagne and Languedoc, and the peaceful penetration of the duchies of Burgundy and Brittany were all vital steps towards the territorial unification of France. Before any of them could be accomplished it was necessary to remove the danger — at least in its more acute form — presented by the existence in western France of the great conglomeration of fiefs controlled by the Angevin kings of England.
