Abstract
The problem of machine interference is encountered when the otherwise continuous running of manufacturing processes is interrupted for servicing, that is, for loading, unloading, adjustment or other attention by setter or operative. Difficulties in determining the optimum man/machine work load arise particularly when one or more operatives have charge of two or more machines and when the machines have to be stopped or stop at irregular intervals of time. The problem is complicated if the operative has duties other than attending the machines concerned. Solutions of specific problems and of idealised versions of problems have been published from time to time (see, e. g., Refs. 99–101).
