Surveying, Setting Out and Site Investigation

  • Chapter
Municipal Engineering Practice

Abstract

The municipal engineer is required to carry out many classes of survey in connection with various aspects of municipal engineering work. For instance, he may have to make a survey of a site for a new sewage disposal works, a large housing estate or the line of a new road. A small land survey can be carried out satisfactorily with chain and tape, but a large area will probably call for the use of a theodolite and a traverse survey. When the redevelopment of large areas is being considered it is often advantageous to use aerial surveys.
