Abstract
Louis XIV’s funeral cortège carefully avoided Paris, but there they were dancing in the streets. The icy grip of despotism was ended and the thaw had arrived at last. The rejoicing which followed was not altogether misplaced, but unfortunately it was overdone. The ice was to return, even though it was never again to be quite so thick.
