Abstract

This long obituary notice was composed by Augustus himself and kept up to date to the year of his death (ยง4). He ordered it to be engraved on two bronze plaques outside his mausoleum. These have perished, but copies of the Latin original or of the official Greek translation were engraved on temples at Ancyra, Apollonia, and Antioch of Pisidia, and from these it is possible to reconstitute the entire text.
