Hardy’s first novel was written in the second half of 1867, after his return to Dorset from London. The first draft was completed in January 1868; the revised copy was finished by the early part of the following June. Initially described as ‘A story with no plot, containing some original verses’, it was never published. Portions of it survive, with modifications, in Hardy’s other works; the manuscript was lost or destroyed.
