Abstract

The terms of reference for this paper do not include a comprehensive statement of what exactly should be understood by ‘technological advance’. However, it seems useful to elaborate this concept, as applied by the authors herein. Our premise is that advance in general, and technological advance in particular, can only be outlined as pertaining to its usefulness to humanity. This being a pragmatic, not an objective, concept, our task is less laborious, on the one hand, because no figures must be quoted to measure technological advance, and more difficult, on the other, because trends, rather than simple facts, must be shown.
