Littoral Drift

  • Chapter
Coastal Hydraulics

Abstract

Littoral drift is the name given to the longshore transport of material, under the action of waves and currents: the movement occurring along or near the foreshore. It is deliberately treated separately from marine sediment transport. There is no sharp dividing line to mark the water depth at which one effect begins and the other ends, and any attempt to make such a sharp distinction would have little value. It is nevertheless instructive to define the factors which affect such a definition in principle.
