Some Basic Cellular Functions
A text on the structure and function of higher plants should include a number of topics which have already been discussed in Jensen’s The Plant Cell in this series. Several of these topics are of such central importance to modern plant physiology (study of plant function) that their complete omission from this volume does not seem justified, even though they are elsewhere discussed. Hence this chapter provides a brief survey of important topics in the cellular physiology of plants. The student, depending upon his previous experience, may consider these either as introduction or as review. The first sections on diffusion and osmosis are relatively complete (more so than in Jensen); remaining sections are somewhat briefer (at least compared to what is known in these areas).
