Abstract

History, whatever else may be said about it, is generally agreed to begin with the earliest written records. But writing does not start until a very long time after the appearance of Man himself, and it is the function of prehistory to fill in the gap, by tracing the story of human development backwards in time, as far and as completely as possible.
